How to Choose Antivirus Software for Your Computer
Published January 15, 2026 · 7 min read
Start with how you use your computer, not the product tier names
Manufacturers name their tiers things like 'Antivirus Plus', 'Internet Security', and 'Total Security', which makes comparison shopping feel like comparing marketing instead of features. A more useful starting point is your own usage pattern: how many devices, which operating systems, and what you actually do online (banking, gaming, remote work, shared family use).
A single Windows laptop used mainly for browsing and email has very different needs from a household running Windows, macOS, and a couple of phones, where banking and shared logins are involved.
Decide if you need more than malware scanning
Core antivirus software focuses on detecting and removing malware. If you want a managed firewall, phishing-site filtering, or protections aimed specifically at online banking, you're looking at an 'Internet Security' tier from most manufacturers. If you also want bundled extras like VPN access, cloud backup, or parental controls, that's typically the 'Total Security' or '360' tier.
It's worth resisting the urge to buy the biggest bundle 'just in case' — if you already use a separate password manager or backup service, a narrower security tier is often the more cost-effective choice.
Check compatibility before you check price
Before comparing prices, check which operating systems a plan supports, the minimum OS version, and how many devices it covers. Our product overviews list supported platforms and link to each publisher's official page for current requirements. Confirming compatibility first avoids the most common post-purchase disappointment: buying a license that doesn't support your actual OS version or device count.
Understand the billing model before you buy
Most consumer antivirus products are sold as annual subscriptions that renew automatically unless cancelled, and the renewal price is often higher than the first-year price. Before you buy, check the renewal price and how to turn off auto-renewal in your account with the publisher, so there are no surprises on your statement.
