Frequently asked questions
General questions about ShieldScout. For questions about a specific type of software, see its category page.
What is ShieldScout?
ShieldScout publishes free, independent guides to choosing security and productivity software. We explain what each type of software does and what to compare before you decide.
Do you sell software?
No. We don't sell software, license keys, or subscriptions, and we don't take payments. If you decide to buy, purchase directly from the software publisher's official website or a retailer you trust.
Do you offer technical support?
No. We don't provide technical support, remote assistance, or virus removal, and we will never ask you to call a phone number or install remote-access software. For help with a product you own, contact its publisher through the official website.
Are you paid by the software companies you write about?
No. We are not affiliated with or paid by any software publisher mentioned on this site, and links to publishers do not earn us a commission.
How current is the product information?
Product overviews are editorial summaries. Features, plans, and prices change often, so always confirm current details on the publisher's official website before you decide.
Are the product illustrations official packaging photos?
No. The artwork on this site is original illustration and is not a product photo, manufacturer logo, or depiction of retail packaging.
I saw a pop-up saying my computer is infected and to call a number. Is it real?
Almost certainly not. Legitimate security software and operating systems don't ask you to phone a support number from a browser pop-up. Close the tab (or the whole browser), don't call the number, and don't let anyone connect to your computer remotely.
