What we did instead: pulled the current, publicly published results from both independent labs, checked each vendor’s own pricing and terms pages directly, and weighed them against each other using the methodology below. Each score weighs four things: independent lab protection results (40%) from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives’ most recent published cycles, performance impact (20%) — how much the software slows down everyday use, feature value relative to price (20%), and usability and transparency of pricing (20%), including how aggressively a vendor discloses its renewal rate. The case for each pick

Bitdefender Total Security currently posts the most consistent top-tier detection numbers of anything on this list — 99.97% in AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 round — with a genuinely full feature set (firewall, ransomware rollback, webcam protection) included rather than upsold. The tradeoff is a steep renewal jump after year one that you need to actively manage.

Norton 360 Deluxe is the pick if you want antivirus, VPN, cloud backup and dark web monitoring under one subscription instead of four separate ones. Its AV-TEST scores are excellent (a 2026 Top Product award), and the 60-day money-back guarantee is longer than most competitors offer.
